Who doesn’t love summer? Everything just seems so much easier that time of year, with simple salads and barbeques, days spent lazing on a beach and being able to just throw on a t-shirt and shorts before heading out the door.
But, all good things must come to an end and before we know it, there’s a chill in the air, the leaves are falling and your local coffee shop has started selling pumpkin spiced lattes.
While there are lots of things to love about fall – including those yummy lattes! – it also means that it’s time to switch up your wardrobe and although the change of seasons is a great excuse to go shopping, there are many ways you can make the transition using pieces already in your summer closet.
The following tips are just a few ways that you can keep on wearing your favorite summer clothes right into the fall and beyond.
1. Autumnal Accessories
Adding accessories to your summer clothing is a great way to ease into autumn in a stylish way. While you don’t want to be pulling out your winter mitts quite so soon, light scarves and hats provide added warmth and can give an extra dimension to your summer outfits.
Invest in some neutral-colored light cotton scarves to add drama to a summer dress and ditch the floppy sunhat for a trendy newsboy cap or chic beret.
2. Lower the Tone
We love the bright colors and pretty pastels of summer clothes but somehow they just don’t work as well when the temperature drops. Adding some darker, warmer-hued clothing to your outfits tones down the whole look making it more appropriate for the chillier time of year. Burgundies, dark greens and mustard yellows are all great colors for fall and can easily be incorporated into your closet.
3. Keep it Classic
Chillier temperatures call for added layers and nothing looks as cool as a classic denim or leather jacket. Paired with a pretty summer dress, either of these wardrobe staples add an edge, with a timeless quality that never goes out of style.
If you don’t already have one of these classics already, then it’s definitely worth the investment and you may just wonder how you ever lived without them!
4. Booty Call
One of the best parts of fall is the chance to wear all those cute boots that have been packed away all summer! Ankle boots, calf-length or knee-highs, a great pair of boots will immediately take your look into fall and can be paired with so many different pieces, the possibilities are endless! A chunky pair of biker boots adds an edge to a delicate summer skirt while slouchy calf-length styles look totally on-trend with cut-off jeans and opaque tights.
5. Over and Under
The fall is the perfect time to get creative with layers. Mixing and matching your summer pieces with cardigans, light sweaters and long ‘boho’ vests is the best way to transition into fall without packing away your summer clothes completely.
Summer dresses over skinny jeans, cropped sweatshirts or shrugs with maxi skirts and skimpy camisoles under tailored blazers will give your look a unique vibe while breaking some fashion rules in the most stylish way.
And don’t forget, when it comes to fashion, rules are there to be broken – if you want to wear white after Labor Day, go right ahead…you never know, you may just start a trend!
