When considering hair waxing, there are so many questions that people have, exacerbating their fears of getting waxed. With so many questions, this article attempts to answer the most common ones.
How does waxing work?
After choosing the part of the body where the hair is to be removed, a wax combination is spread thinly over the skin. Next, a cloth strip is pressed on the top of that area and then ripped off with a quick movement. This removes the wax, the hair and the dead skin cells leaving the skin clean and smooth.
What is the difference between hot and cold waxes?
A good hot wax melts just above body temperature, so it can be easily spread thinly over the skin. As it hardens, it traps the hair in the wax, allowing for it to be removed by the roots when the wax is removed.
Cold waxes, also known as Persian Waxes, use pre-coated strips that are pressed directly onto the skin. The hair sticks to the wax and is removed with a quick pull.
What effect does waxing have on the skin?
Dead skin cells are removed during the waxing process and the skin can feel quite smooth afterward. The process does cause the skin to sting and a soothing skin cream can be incredibly helpful following the process. Some redness and irritation may occur right after the procedure, but they disappear after a few hours.
Are there any health concerns about hair waxing?
Waxing is not recommended for those who suffer from diabetes, have varicose veins, or poor circulation, as they are more susceptible to infection following the treatment.
Anyone using Retin-A, Renova, Differin or Accutane should not have their face waxed, as these medications weaken the skin. In additions, areas of the skin affected by warts, pimples, moles or rashes, or skin that is irritated, chapped or suffering from sunburn, should not be waxed.
Wax should never be applied to the nipples when removing hair from the breast area.
What body areas can be waxed?
A small test area should be done first, but waxing can typically occur on most parts of the body, except male genitalia, nipples, inside the ears and nose, and eyelashes.
How long will waxing last?
It generally takes three to eight weeks for waxed hair to grow back. Less hair re-grows after a waxing, and it is generally a finer hair.
