Vitamin and Minerals Facts

When an individual sits down and really considers the nutritional value of the foods that they are consuming, they may find themselves coming up short when it comes to certain Vitamins and minerals. While many of the Vitamins marketed towards individuals work equally well for both men and women, men over the age of 40 may want to take the time to research which Vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients they need to help care for their specific needs. For example, after a certain age a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer or suffering an injury due to strenuous work and exercise goes up substantially.

Whether a person is getting the Vitamins and nutrients that they need from their food or from some other source, there are certain Vitamins that everyone needs. Vitamin C may be the most common and often recommended Vitamin, and with good reason. This Vitamin provides a host of benefits, not the least of which is protecting the prostate and helping to heal quickly after infections. Even more important when it comes to the fight against prostate cancer are Vitamins E and D. Vitamin B6 is an excellent Vitamin because it helps to metabolize proteins and Vitamin A, as well as C and E, are rich in antioxidants.

In addition to Vitamins, there are certain minerals that an individual needs to make sure that they are consuming enough of. For men the most important of these minerals may very well be zinc. The prostate gland uses zinc for the production of semen and an individual with a low amount of zinc in his body may find that he produces less semen than he did in the past. It is also important for a man to make sure that he is getting enough calcium since, like women, men are susceptible to things like osteoporosis.

There are a number of ways for a person to get the Vitamins and minerals that they need to stay healthy, but most experts and physicians recommend a person try to get as many of these vital nutrients as possible from the foods that they are eating. Fresh fruits and leafy green vegetables are some of the best sources of their when it comes to healthy Vitamins. Additionally, a man should strive to include as many whole grains and lean meats in his diet as possible to ensure that he is getting the protein and fiber that he needs without unnecessary calories or fat.
